Right on track: Key infrastructural upgrade delivered for Network Rail Telecoms

Date: August 2015

ADComms has successfully completed a key infrastructural upgrade for Network Rail Telecoms (NRT) on the West Coast Mainline on budget and ahead of time across three locations.

The project has been undertaken with a collaborative approach from both the ADComms and NRT project teams, and has seen ADComms has been complemented on the excellent craftsmanship of the works by its client.

Commissioned to replace the existing BT telecommunications infrastructure installed on the line, the project scope spanned 128 sites throughout electronic control room (ECR) locations in Rugby, Eastleigh and Crewe. Calling on ADComms’ expertise over the areas of electrical design, telecoms and electrical installation, site access planning and site safety, ADComms provided quality installations across three electrical control rooms, 78 internal room solutions and 47 external trackside cabinets.

The upgrade was completed in a demanding environment, where specific competencies were required to enable safe access and working on site. Prior design and planning were key to the project’s success, with ADComms staging and testing a number of design solutions at its in-house integration facility in Scunthorpe prior to on-site installation. This same model has successfully deployed over 2,000 relocatable equipment buildings (REBs) on the GSM-R network.

The project is an extension to NRT’s national FTN (fixed telecom network) upgrade programme across sites that have historically been served by third party services – in this case, BT. The upgrade was delivered ahead of the completion date by working collaboratively with NRT’s project team. The project is now at the commissioning and mitgrating stage, with completion scheduled by NRT for early autumn.

“The upgrade will both significantly cut costs for Network Rail and allow the operator to take ownership of its telecommunications on this line for the first time,”
says ADComms chief executive Jason Pearce.
“We are delighted to have successfully delivered this key upgrade ahead of plan, on budget and to a high standard.”
