ADComms signals success with Rail Business Award commendation

Date: April 2015

ADComms, one of Europe’s leading rail telecommunications solutions providers, was highly commended in the technical innovation category at this year’s Rail Business Awards (RBA). The awards, which took place on 26th February, celebrates’ outstanding achievements across the British rail sector over the past year.

This year’s category proved to be particularly competitive, with ADComms handed a commendation in recognition of its flexible, rapid deployment of an infill RF (radio frequency) solution for Network Rail.

During the nationwide roll-out of FTN/GMS-R, Network Rail had discovered an issue with RF ‘holes’, where there was no signal working as expected. These RF black spots had the potential to disrupt project delivery and prevent Network Rail from achieving key ORR (Office of Rail Regulation) milestones. Bought on board by Network Rail to assess the problem, ADComms successfully established an all-new RF solution methodology.

From initial problem identification, ADComms took the concept from internal technology development and Network Rail approvals, to final installation and commissioning in just three weeks. Thanks to this new solution, ADComms has now made it possible to plan, survey, test, build and commission a repeater site within a week of identifying an RF hole.

The solution itself is capable of deployment within 48 hours, and no track possession is required. These rapid deployments have meant that the costly delays to the FTN test train runs were avoided and, crucially, vital ORR handover deadlines were met.

Thanks to ADComms’ speedy delivery, total estimated value of savings to Network Rail’s program is in excess of £3 million.

ADComms was additionally shortlisted for awards in the RBA’s contractor excellence and engineering excellence categories in recognition of its recent work with Merseyrail. This project saw ADComms design an all-new leaky feed infrastructure to support the installation of GSM-R on Merseyrail’s Sub-Surface Railway upgrade.

Jason Pearce, ADComms’ managing director, commented:

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see the team’s collective skill and hard work recognised by this commendation at the Rail Business Awards. We’re committed to delivering a sector-leading service to our diverse client base and our recent work with Network Rail is certainly testament to that. It’s an exciting time for the rail communications sector, which is undergoing digital transformation. We’re delighted to be a part of it.”
